A "Crash Course" on Visual Literacy
According to the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL; 2011)
"Visual literacy is a set of abilities that enables an individual to effectively find, interpret, evaluate, use, and create images and visual media." "A visually literate individual is both a critical consumer of visual media and a competent contributor to a body of shared knowledge and culture. " National Council of Teachers of English also recognizes the importance of exploring visual literacy with students: To participate in a global society, we continue to extend our ways of communicating. Viewing and visually representing are part of our growing consciousness of how people gather and share information. Teachers and students need to expand their appreciation of the power of print and nonprint texts. Teachers should guide students in constructing meaning through creating and viewing nonprint texts.
